Transportation

You would need to move around Lisbon, right? Here is how.

When you arrive in Lisbon, it is probably better to take a cab straight to your home, chart your required route (Most likely to the university and back around Lisbon). Ask your neighbours or google maps how to get to the nearest metro so you can request for a permanent transportation pass (this pass is usually issued in form a card-the Lisboa Viva card- with your basic details).  However you can make do with the temporary passes for a couple of days.

The metro stations that issue the initial card are Marquês de Pombal, Campo Grande, Colégio Militar/Luz, Jardim Zoológico, Rossio, Baixa-Chiado, Cais do Sodré, Oriente and Aeroporto. If you need the card urgently (you can pick it up 1 useful day after you order it) the metro stations that issue it are Marquês de Pombal and Campo Grande.

You can make subsequent renewals of the pass in any other station or in an ATM. The passes are valid from the 1st day of the month until the last.

BONUS FLASH: In order to get a discount on cards, provided you are 23 years “young” or less, you may get a declaration from your university and apply for a transportation pass that reduces your monthly fair charges by 25%. Don’t forget that you need to deliver to a station that issues cards a declaration that you are enrolled in university at the beginning of each school year to still enjoy this reduced price.

Getting around Lisbon can also be accessible from your phone, all you need to do is download the Carris Application on Google play store. It helps you navigate in a “Timely” fashion. All bus tops and time of arrivals are on this App. Cool right…
